The 4711 Original fragrance was first created in 1709 (launched in 1792) in Cologne, under the direction of Italian perfumer Johann Maria Farina. The cologne was made using lemon, orange, mandarin, bergamot, lime, grapefruit, and cedar oils (and of course several other secret ingredients) to produce a perfumed water that he named "Cologne water" after the city where he lived.
